Ali was born in Maun. After completing his schooling in Maun, he joined the army(BDF) where he was trained in communications, serving as a radioman until 1985.Having been born on the doorstep of the world-famous Okavango Delta, Ali had a love affair with the wild and animals and he was encouraged by his cousin to take an interest in the tourism opportunities which were beginning to be offered at that time in Botswana.
Ali embarked on a series of short courses and employment opportunities. He worked briefly in the insurance industry as a salesman in Namibia, before joining a corporate wear company also as a salesman. In that time he completed a certificate in management, a course in Quality Systems Implementation at the Pretoria Technikon in RSA. He then went to do a Higher Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management, Sales & Marketing and Stock Control through Cambridge College.
Ali’s love for the bush saw him return to the tourism industry in 1997 as a professional guide, working at Xakanaka(Moremi) as a senior guide, before doing mobile safaris for Karibu Safaris and guiding at Jao Camp for a year. It was during this time that Ali was introduced to Sanctuary Retreats, where he began doing mobile safaris before a management stint at Stanley’s camp.
Ali joined Chief’s camp and has been based at Chief’s camp for nearly 10 years, conducting private guided tours in the Okavango Delta, Chobe, Savuti, Makgadikgadi Pans, Central Kalahari, Zimbabwe, Zambia & South Africa.
“He is an incredibly jovial character, with an easy laugh and a wonderful sense of humour. His depth & detail of knowledge, scientific & behavioural, about the delta and its fauna & flora, is second to none, and he has a marvellous ability to bring this across to guests in an effortless manner. Ali is a true professional in every sense of the word when it comes to guiding, and you would be hard pressed to find a guide more able, skilled, knowledgeable and humorous in the delta…” – A&K Safaris
